Fall detection in the residential care sector

Independent living with added safety features

Falls within the residential and health care sector are a common occurrence, unfortunately, and, until recently, the technology to capture them and ensure help arrives as quickly as possible has been somewhat lacking.

Fall detection solutions that simply tell you whether someone is moving, such as bed pressure mats and PIR motion sensors, do not really help, as they generate too many false positives, which staff must respond to. For example, has someone really fallen, or just got out of bed for a valid reason?

These technologies are generally standalone and do not integrate well with third party software solutions or mobile device technology such as iPhones.

Wearable technology in a watch form factor exists, but it will generally only notify you that it has detected a fall. But what if the resident has gone wandering in the night and the fall happened in a stairwell at the other end of the building to their room? How do you find them?

Indoor and outdoor location detail for fall detection

Our solution will alert you to a potential fall and it will also tell you exactly where that resident is. It works inside or outside, and from a single wearable device, that can be worn as a wristwatch-style or as a pendant necklace.

The algorithm it uses is smart. It analyses the person’s movement of the device based on how they usually wear the device, and it can even be tailored to match a person’s specific physical profile.

If the device detects a fall the notification along with their location will immediately go to staff mobile devices, PCs or even simple text or email – you can choose. If you already have an older nurse call system, it can even integrate with that.

Access control for residents’ rooms and communal entrances

Using the technology within the wearable device it can also provide a full access control solution for your residential care home. As a resident gets close to their door, the device will automatically unlock the door, so no fumbling for keys or leaving the room unlocked.

Your staff can continue to use a traditional card style fob, or alternatively they can have a card that can also track their location as they are on shift.

Detailed access data can then be viewed so you always know who has accessed what rooms and when.

Infection control

Using the detailed location data from the system, we can give you a detailed history of which residents have been in contact and when. If you need to know who has potentially been exposed to an infectious illness the data is there for you to take appropriate action.

Deployment and installation times

The solution is battery powered, which means it can be deployed in a matter of hours and not a single cable has to be run within your building. The disruption to your operation and residents is minimal with no mess or noise.

Please feel free to get in touch for a live demo and run through of the system.
